Poniente Route

A tour of the whole area of the bastion, the Alameda and the Caleta Beach

The route towards the ocean will allow us to go around the walled city and its main bastions for defence against the enemy. From the sea, we will see the batteries of San Felipe and San Carlos, now converted into public promenades and integrated into the city’s urban layout.

What we will see on the Poniente route

We will be able to admire the grandiose alameda, the comfortable balcony where the people of Cadiz look out over their bay, as the towns of El Puerto de Santa María and Rota can be seen opposite.

We will sail along the same channel through which the great galleons full of merchandise from what was then known as the New World entered Cadiz. After passing the bastion of Candelaria, and without ceasing to admire a perfectly preserved city centre, we come across the Genoves Park, a botanical garden with hundreds of species brought from America and planted next to the wall and the sea.

Finally, we enter the Caleta, the old port of the city, flanked by the imposing castles of Santa Catalina and San Sebastián. In the background, the old Balneario de la Palma, built on the sands of the beach.
